Treatment modalities and functional outcome of shaft of femur fractures

Abstract

With the increase in the incidence of motor vehicle accidents, high energy trauma, the incidence of the shaft of femur fractures has also increased. As there is a need for early mobilization in patients with shaft of femur fractures due to increased risk of complications due to immobilization, an efficient modality of management is necessary which will provide early mobilization and decrease the number of complications. The different surgical modalities for the treatment of these fractures are Intramedullary nails (IMN), Locking Plates and External fixators. The purpose of the review is to assess different modalities based on different articles published either comparing the modalities in the same type of fractures or different types of fractures treated with one of the above-mentioned modalities. Based on the results obtained from these articles it can be concluded that closed shaft of femur fractures treated with Closed Intramedullary Interlocking Nailing had better functional outcome and advantages like early mobilization when compared to the other treatment modalities in the closed fractures of the shaft of femur.
