Abstract

Introduction: Acute diarrhoeal disaeses constitutes about 1.5-2.5 million deaths each year.It is one of the significant paediatric disease and most common cause for pediatric morbidity and mortality in children under 5 years of age1.In Indian health scenario, every third admission in children is due to diarrhoeal illness and 17% of deaths in paediatric patients is due to diarrhea.Majority of acute diarrhoeal diseases lead to fluid and electrolyte imbalance resulting in dehydration and metabolic acidosis leading to death. These are preventable deaths where proper fluid and electrolyte correction plays a key role. Oral Rehydration Therapy has saved the life of millions of children and was first introduced about 30 yrs back. It still remains main stay of therapy for acute watery diarrhoeal disease.
