Abstract

The term functional appliance refers to a large and diverse family of orthodontic appliances designed mainly to correct Class II malocclusion. They were developed primarily in Europe but have been adoptedby orthodontists in many countries. They all work by posturing the lower jaw forward, the stretched musculature and soft tissues creating a force, which is transmitted to the dentition. In addition, the soft tissue envelopesurrounding the teeth is changed. This results in tooth movement, establishment of a new occlusal relationship and reduction of the overjet
