THE EFFECTIVENESS OF COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY IN PATIENTS WITH STAGE 1 AND STAGE 2 OF CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE: A COMPARATIVE STUDY

Abstract

Aim The purpose of the present research was to assess the efficacy of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) in patients suffering from chronic kidney disease (Stage 1 and 2). Methodology In a randomized trial conducted in College of Teaching Hospital and Medical Sciences (COMSTH) Bharathpur, Nepal from December 2011 to December 2012 consisting 100 male participants (50 participants suffering from CKD stage I – Group-I and other 50 from CKD stage 2- Group-II) undergoing dyalysis and hemodylisis. The Samples collected from the Nephrology unit of COMS-TH Bharatpur Nepal . Diagnosis of CKD was done by Nephrologists of COMS-TH. The participants received a year of CBT therapy under the scrutiny of psychologist. For evaluating depression amongst the participants, Beck Depression Inventory and Hamilton Depression Inventory was used. Results Regarding depression symptoms, there were 13 (31.7%) patients with mild, 14 (34.1%) with moderate, and 14 (34.1%) with severe symptoms in the group-1; in the group-2, the corresponding figures were 6 (13.6%), 21 (47.7%), and 17 (38.6%), respectively (P not significant). Compared with the group II, the group I had a lower mean in the BDI cognitive subscale throughout the assessment (P<0.001).
